Getting pregnant can be harder than you think and around one in seven couples have difficulty conceiving. If you are having unprotected intercourse regularly you should conceive within two years, but in any one month your chances of conception are only around 20 to 30 per cent.
Reproreflexology is a specialised and increasingly popular area of Reflexology developed over the last 15 years. It is an invaluable tool in helping to gather information regarding your own natural fertility; your menstrual cycle, peak fertile times and alternate ways to enhance your fertility levels. It can be useful for those who are experiencing difficulties with conceiving or for those who wish to ensure the best possible start to their pregnancy (pre-conceptual care).
Debbie has personally trained with Barbara Scott at Seren Natural Fertility. Barbara is acknowledged as one of the leading experts in treating couples during assisted cycles.
Reproreflexology can assist couples who would like support with:
If you have been trying for a baby for 18 months to two years without success, a visit to your GP could help to highlight any potential problems. If you are over 35, it would be wise to see your GP after six months of trying as fertility tests take time to complete.
Fertility is affected by many different factors, such as diet and lifestyle, but in around 20 per cent of cases, the causes are unknown. What we do know however, is there is no doubt that stress plays a very significant role in a couple's ability to conceive.
Stress and Fertility
So many of us are trying to do too much in too little time as we battle with work problems, tensions at home or financial worries. Many people have a very high adrenaline output causing the body to believe it is about to run for its life or fight to survive...not the ideal environment for conception! As the stress escalates, the adrenal glands start producing hormones that dampen down the reproductive system in an attempt to protect the body against conception believing a life-threatening event is imminent.
Try to reduce stress levels by exercising regularly (a brisk walk outside will do wonders) or perhaps take a holiday in the sun. As we relax, adrenal activity returns to normal and research has found that sunlight increases testosterone levels, the hormone that increases sexual desire. It also stimulates the pituitary gland, which in turn stimulates the hormones controlling the reproductive system. So, provided your fertile period comes at the right time, you may be more likely to conceive while on holiday!
Reflexology Treatments
Couples with fertility issues go through a huge rollercoaster of emotions which affect the rest of their lives. It's pretty hard facing friends and family members with new babies and relationships can strain under the stress. Your reflexology treatments not only give you complete relaxation but the opportunity to talk to Debbie about feelings and concerns that you may not have been able to voice to anyone else.
The correct functioning of the hormonal and reproductive system of both men and women is very susceptible to stress and tension and reflexology can be of great benefit in this situation, both through the sense of emotional support and the stress relief it brings. Reflexology stimulates and stabilizes the whole hormonal and reproductive systems in both men and women, and encourages the body to establish a normal cycle while calming the mind, body and spirit.
Reproreflexology Protocol:
Increase your chances of getting pregnant
EAT WELL - A balanced diet will help ensure a woman's body is healthy enough to conceive and nourish a developing baby. A healthy diet can also help to keep sperm production at optimum levels.
WATCH YOUR WEIGHT - Being overweight (you have a BMI of more than 29) or underweight (you have a BMI of less than 19) can disturb your menstrual cycle or stop it completely.
TAKING SUPPLEMENTS - The government recommends that all women trying to conceive should take 400mcg of folic acid daily to help protect against conditions such as spina bifida.
DRINK WISELY - Alcohol may affect fertility and increase the risk of miscarriage as well as affecting sperm quality.
STOP SMOKING - Smoking (and passive smoking) has been linked to infertility and early menopause in women and sperm problems in men, as well as being a factor in premature or low birth-weight babies. The NHS Smoking Helpline can advise and support - tel: 0800 022 4 332 www.gosmokefree.nhs.uk
MEDICINES AND DRUGS - Some prescription and over-the-counter drugs can lessen your chances of conceiving. If you are taking regular medication talk to your GP about safe alternatives. Recreational drugs such as marijuana and cocaine should obviously be avoided.
GET ACTIVE - Regular, moderate exercise of around 30 minutes a day helps maximise your fitness and keeps your weight in check as well as boosting your endorphins (our happy hormones).
KEEP IT COOL - For maximum sperm production the testes should be a couple of degrees cooler than the rest of the body. It may be helpful for men to wear loose fitting underwear and trousers and avoid saunas and hot showers.
